Author Event Summary - Myra McEntire; Also, the aPAULcalypse at ApPAULbee's

Saturday ushered forth another fantastic author event, this time Myra McEntire, solo.  Shalena from Writer Quirk and I headed to the Edmondson Pike Library in Nashville which, let me just say, has a really awesome librarian going to bat for YA literature.  We really need more like her around here.  Thanks, Angela, for coordinating such a fun event!  I would so attend another event at your library in a heartbeat.

Shalena and I were about 10 minutes late thanks to our silly bookstores who can't seem to stock books by local authors.  What's up with that!?  When we did finally arrive, it was to find everyone seated in a circle.

We were greeted (which was a relief since we WERE so very late).  What ensued was one of the most relaxed, FUN author events I've had the pleasure to attend.  We talked about everything: Myra's books (obviously); other books we read; TV; movies; our mounting frustration with the local bookstores and their overall ignorance of just how well YA is selling, which, in turn, leads to difficulty in getting more YA author events in place; and so much more.  It felt more like sitting around while chatting with friends, which was a blast!  I absolutely loved it.

After the talk portion of the event was finished, people broke up into smaller groups to chat, get their books signed, and get to know each other in general.  We bloggers generally mingled and traded books.  Fun was had by all.  Myra brought cupcakes with sea creature decorations, which prompted Lauren from The Housework Can Wait to decide that a rumor should be started stating that Myra's next book will be about mermaids.  Hee!  I got my book signed, chatted with Myra for a couple of minutes about a blog event, and lined up with some of the ladies for a group pic.

Myra had her family with her, so she had to leave after 2 hours, but I can tell you that that 2 hours was such a great time.

From here on out we delve into what shall be known here as "The Epic of Paul."  Fair warning: this could get long.

After the meeting room cleared out, Shannon from Stalking the Bookshelves, Lauren, Shalena, and I decided to pile into my car and go out for an impromptu blogger lunch.  We found ourselves at an Applebee's in the neighborhood where, as it turns out, we were to be met with pure comedy gold.  His name was Paul.  What can I say about Paul?  Lauren says it best in her post (HERE), where she has even composed a sonnet about our perpetually absent waiter, but I will do my best to capture his essence.

First off, we were there anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes before we even met our waiter.  When the elusive Paul finally showed up at our table, he acted surprised to see us.  This could be the first clue that he might have been high as a kite.  It's all conjecture, but Paul was certainly giving us cause to wonder!  Luckily, by the time he came to ask us what we would like to drink, we had also figured out what we wanted to eat, so we placed that order, as well.  Otherwise, we might still be sitting in that Applebee's, waiting for him to bring us food.  As it was, another waiter brought us our food (complete with fun nicknames for our plates!  Why couldn't we have had that waiter?).  We tucked into our food with enough conversation to keep us distracted from the bad service.

What happened next was just... odd.  All of a sudden, a refill of my drink was placed before me.  It came out of nowhere.  Also unexpected: NO ONE ELSE WAS GIVEN A REFILL.  We waited.  And we waited.  And we waited some more.  It took probably another 30 minutes for Shalena, Shannon, and Lauren to receive refills.  In that time period, we watched as Paul delivered an appetizer platter to the table next to us.  It was, of course, the wrong table.  Of course!  Now we were really intrigued by our server's bizarre behavior.  We began to observe his actions.  We learned these four things:

1. He only had one facial expression.  It somewhat resembled this:

Unlike these villagers, Paul didn't get better. (pic found HERE)
2. He would disappear for 30 minutes at a time, which was really bad when refills were needed.

Forget Neptune.  I'm convinced Paul was on Pluto. (Pic found HERE)

3. He would start walking toward our end of the restaurant, only to do an abrupt about-face and walk in the opposite direction.  We never did figure out what he was doing.

A poorly-executed audition for the Ministry, perhaps? (pic found HERE)

4. He will keep your change.  All $0.08 of it, as Lauren found out.  Somehow, though, he missed the dime lying on the floor.  It was left on the table for him.

To say that the service was bad is an understatement.  A hilarious one, but an understatement, all the same.  I don't know how we began, but we started making some of the most awful puns in the history of pun-making.  They so suited the situation, though.  My take on it: we survived the aPAULcalypse at ApPAULbee's.  Shalena said we had apPAULing service.  Lauren says this is why he received such a PAULtry tip.  Shannon later wished us PAULitely goodnight after we rehashed the evening on Twitter.

Paul will forever live in infamy and is now Lauren's muse.  Her first poem, "Ode to Paul," was a thing of beauty and her second one, "Longing for Paul," was also a success.  We now have a poet in our midsts!  We owe Lauren's new-found calling in life to Myra, for she was the one to bring us all together for this momentous day!  Thanks to Myra, all the ladies that attended today's event, Shalena, Shannon, Lauren, and, of course, Paul, I laughed more that day that I had in weeks.  Thank you all so much for making my week after surgery such a bright spot.  I wouldn't have missed it for the world.

Author Event - Amy Plum, Myra McEntire, & CJ Redwine, Plus a Giveaway!

Monday, May 14th shall be forever known as the day that a load of TN book bloggers took over the Green Hills Panera Bread and Parnassus Books.

from the Parnassus website

Myself, Nikki from Books Most Wanted, Hannah from The Book Vortex, Shalena from Writer Quirk, Megan from Myth-illogical, and Lauren from The Housework Can Wait met up 2 hours before the main event was to start for some good food and conversation.  Fun was had by all as we regaled each other with off-the-wall stories and shared some laughs.  The fun was only just beginning, however, as it was soon time to head to Parnassus Books to meet Amy Plum, Myra McEntire, and CJ Redwine.

The event kicked off with a quick introduction from Amy Plum and Myra McEntire as they caught us all up to speed on themselves and their books.

Then, it was time to settle in for some serious book talk.

We also got to hear a little bit from Until I Die and Timepiece.

Next up, it was Q&A time.  Let me tell you, both of these ladies were very inspiring.  I felt so much better about my own writing after they told us about their writing journeys.  One of my favorite tips from Myra in regards to the critiquing process: "Don't be a nut bag."  Wiser words were never spoken, my friends.

Last, but not least, it was time to meet the authors face-to-face, get our books signed, and snap some pics.

This was my first time officially meeting CJ Redwine (I think she was at Ash 2 Nash, but I didn't meet her that day) and I have to say, I am even more excited to read Defiance (if that's even possible).  It was also rather heartening to learn that I am not the only one prone to strange accidents involving meals or social situations.

Me with CJ Redwine
Though it was my 3rd time meeting Myra, it was a pleasure, as always.  This woman is utterly hilarious!  I hope you all will stay tuned, as there is something in the works for next month involving a certain Dr. Who fan we all know.

I was very excited to meet Amy Plum for the first time.  She was one of the first authors to contact me via Twitter when I was still just starting out as a YA blogger, which I still remember very fondly.  She was so nice and very easy to talk to.

As always seems to be the case when various members of our group get together, we managed to be amongst the last to leave the store.  We all had a wonderful time getting to know each other better, as well as meeting some truly wonderful authors.

As an added bonus, I have a little souvenir for one lucky US blog reader!  Amy Plum was kind enough to provide 2 signed bookmarks for a blog giveaway, meaning 1 of you will win a signed Die for Me bookmark and a signed Until I Die bookmark. It's my little way of sharing the book signing awesomeness.

Good luck to all those who enter!

Reminder: This giveaway is open only to US entrants.  Please stay tuned for my next international giveaway, which should be available in a few weeks.

Author Event Recap - Rachel Hawkins at Parnassus Books

View of Parnassus from the storefront
March has been a fantastic month for author events!  I attended my second one on Wednesday, March 28.  This time, I got to meet Rachel Hawkins for the second time.  The signing took place at the lovely Parnassus Books in Nashville, TN.  It was my first time visiting Parnassus and, I must say, I was very impressed!  It had the feel of an old-fashioned library (including rolling ladders), yet with a whimsical feel thanks to the star light fixtures and the truly adorable children's section.  They had an awesome variety of YA titles.  I'm definitely going to go back for some retail therapy in the near future.

The table full o' Hex Hall glory!
I made the trek to Nashville with the awesome Heather of SupaGurl Books, who was a total blast to travel with.  After I introduced her to the wonder that is Sweet Sallie's (you're welcome, Heather), we stopped by Nikki's house to pick up her book for the signing, then hit the interstate.  We reached Parnassus with plenty of time to browse around and snag prime seats at the very front.  While we waited, we got to know the also awesome Shalena from Writer Quirk, as well as her friend, Megan (hey, girls!).  We didn't have to wait long until Rachel's arrival and, shortly thereafter, the start of the event.

Rachel sharing her stories from the road
Rachel was an absolute riot.  She regaled us with stories of her tour shenanigans with Ally Carter, including the infamous Philadelphia train incident.  We all had a great time listening to her stories and laughing ourselves silly.  There were no frowns at Parnassus, that's for sure!

The book signing portion was a lot of fun.  We got to chat with Rachel a little, get our books signed (with a grape-scented marker, nonetheless), as well as chat with Myra McEntire, who also attended the event.  I think it's safe to say that all of us bloggers enjoyed ourselves immensely judging by the chatter and laughter coming from our group.  We rounded out the event by standing around talking shop for at least an hour after Rachel and Myra left.  I'm definitely looking forward to May when we might all get to hang out at Parnassus again!

Author Event Recap - Kristen Simmons at Union Avenue Books

Last night I made my first trip to Knoxville's Union Avenue Books for an author event.  It was so nice to be back in Knoxville again and made me regret not having visited the downtown area more often when I lived there.  Union Avenue Books is a cozy bookstore with a great atmosphere located just a few blocks off Henley Street.  It made for a comfortable setting for meeting such a fantastic author as Kristen Simmons.

The event was conducted in the front of the store, where several chairs were placed in a circle, which meant face-to-face time with the author was possible.  It made for a very interactive setting, as the event felt more conversational.  There were some great questions put forth by various attendees, so we all learned a lot about both the book-writing process and the ideas behind Article 5

When asked as to what inspired her to write Article 5, Kristen said that both she and her husband enjoy survivor stories.  She cited several examples, including Man vs. Wild and The Walking Dead.  She also said she drew inspiration from a book banning that took place in Louisville at the time she lived there.  She said that she wondered what would happen of such events ran rampant.  Where does it end?  My question was, "Why did you choose Knoxville for one of the primary settings?"  She stated that since the coastal areas had to be evacuated in her book, everyone needed to move inland.  She researched several cities and said that Knoxville appealed to her.  She had been there before and says that it looks like it would withstand such cataclysmic events well.

Kristen also filled us in on her road to publication.  She told us that it took several manuscripts and several query letters, but she did eventually have the right manuscript and the right query letter reached the right agent at the right time.  She said that a lot of things had to fall into alignment, but that she did find the perfect agent for her.

I had a great time at this event.  Not only did I get to meet Kristen Simmons, I also had the pleasure of meeting Jessica from Confessions of a Bookaholic.  Getting recruited to Team Simmons was also a highlight :-P.  If you, too, would like to attend one of Kristen Simmons tour stops, I encourage you to keep your eyes peeled!  The most current tour ended yesterday, but you should definitely try to make it to a stop when next she goes out on tour.

TN Author Event Alert!

Good news, Tennessee Hex Hall fans!  Rachel Hawkins announced her upcoming tour schedule for Spell Bound on her blog this morning.  There just so happens to be a stop at Nashville's new indie bookstore, Parnassus Books!

If you were able to see Rachel on the Ash2Nash Tour or another event, you'll know what a treat you are in for.  If you've never met her, trust me, you need to go to this signing!

The event will take place on Wednesday, March 28, 2012.  I haven't been able to locate the time of the event, so keep your eyes on the Parnassus website for more information.  Also, don't forget that Spell Bound will hit stores on March 13th!  I hope to see you all there!

Author Event Alert!

Photo from the author's website.
If you are a Tennessee blogger and/or reader or live near the east TN border, do I have news for you!  Kristen Simmons, author of Article 5 (released January 31, 2012 from Tor Teen), will be appearing at Union Ave. Books in Knoxville, TN on March 7, 2012 at 6 PM EST.  If you have already read Article 5, you may recall that part of the book takes place in Knoxville.  Having grown up an hour and a half from Knoxville and even living there for a short time, I was pleasantly surprised to find such a familiar place featured in a book I was enjoying so very much.

Are you going to be there?  Be sure to leave a comment and let me know!

Correction: For some reason, I entered the wrong date.  Kristen Simmons will be appearing on March 7th, not the 6th.  That'll teach me to write posts after a migraine.  In any case, the date has now been corrected.

Image & description from Goodreads.
About the Book:
New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., have been abandoned.

The Bill of Rights has been revoked, and replaced with the Moral Statutes.

There are no more police—instead, there are soldiers. There are no more fines for bad behavior—instead, there are arrests, trials, and maybe worse. People who get arrested usually don't come back.

Seventeen-year-old Ember Miller is old enough to remember that things weren’t always this way. Living with her rebellious single mother, it’s hard for her to forget that people weren’t always arrested for reading the wrong books or staying out after dark. It’s hard to forget that life in the United States used to be different.

Ember has perfected the art of keeping a low profile. She knows how to get the things she needs, like food stamps and hand-me-down clothes, and how to pass the random home inspections by the military. Her life is as close to peaceful as circumstances allow.

That is, until her mother is arrested for noncompliance with Article 5 of the Moral Statutes. And one of the arresting officers is none other than Chase Jennings…the only boy Ember has ever loved.

Author Event Recap - Erin Morgenstern at Nashville Public Library

Though it was a couple of weeks ago, this post is better late than never.  I, along with Nikki from Books Most Wanted, made another trek into Nashville to attend another fabulous event at the Nashville Public Library.  This time, I drove, which was a nerve-wracking experience for me as I rarely drive into downtown Nashville (the edges I can do; downtown with all of its one-way streets is a different story).  I managed to get us there in one piece and on time, so we were able to chat with one of the librarians who just so happened to be in line in front of us, as well as snag some circus-themed treats during the pre-event reception.

When the doors to the auditorium opened, we made our way down the aisle and managed to snag some pretty great seats in the center and a few rows from the stage.  When Ms. Morgenstern took the stage, the audience was treated to a reading from The Night Circus (specifically the scene in which Bailey enters the bottle tent to explore), followed by an enlightening Q&A session.  We were filled in on details about her current work-in-progress, which she described as film noir meets Alice in Wonderland (how intriguing is that!?).  We also learned about The Night Circus being optioned for a film (That's right!  Movie rights have been procured!).  There was talk about the writing process and a key piece of advice was imparted by Ms. Morgenstern via Neil Gaimon: Keep writing and finish things.  Overall, it was a fabulous event and I, for one, was left quite happy.

All that was left was the signing portion of the evening.  Nikki and I got our books signed

and had our pictures taken with Ms. Morgenstern.

At that point, there was still an extensive line behind us, so we left the library, arrived on the wrong level of the parking garage, finally found my car, and then I proceeded to frighten us both on the interstate (one key fact about me: I hate interstate mergers with a fiery passion).  We stopped for dinner in a more familiar city on the outskirts of Nashville, then made our way back to our own city, tired, a bit frazzled (I doubt Nikki will let me drive us to Nashville again), but still enchanted.

Attention TN Book Bloggers & Reveurs...

Erin Morgenstern, author of The Night Circus, will finally be making her way to Tennessee!  As you may know, she was unable to make it to The Southern Festival of Books back in October, but the wait is over.  She will be making a stop at the Nashville Public Library on January 26, 2012.  The event begins at 6:15 PM and includes a discussion, reading, and book signing.  It is part of NPL's Salon@615 series, which I have had the pleasure of attending before.  A beautiful library, a great book, and the author behind it: what can be better?  I hope to see you there!  Let me know if you'll be in attendance, as well.
