Follow Friday & Book Blogger Hop: June 24, 2011

Follow Friday is hosted by Parajunkee and is a way for book bloggers to get to know each other better. To join in and make some friends, simply follow the directions listed by Parajunkee on her blog.

This week's featured blogger is Mickey @ I'm a Book Shark. Be sure to stop by, follow, and say, "Hello!"

This week's question:

In light of the summer solstice. Also known as midsummer... let's talk about fairies. What is your favorite fairy tale or story that revolves around the fae?

I love Irish folk lore very much. There are so many fairy stories included that I don't know if I can pick just one. One of my favorites is concerned with the origin of the sidhe (fairies/elves/whatever you prefer) in Ireland. The Tuatha De Danann (sidhe) came to Ireland and waged war against the Fir Bolg (a reportedly monstrous race), which they eventually won. When the Milesians (man) came to Ireland, the sidhe were driven underground and became the fairies that we think of today. That's the story in a nutshell, anyway.

*edited to add: How could I have neglected to type out my favorite book that has fairies?! That has to be Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier. It is the first novel I can recall reading that made me fall in love with fairies as book characters. It also doesn't hurt that it's based upon another Irish myth! Are you seeing a theme here?

Every week there is a new question. This week, the question is:

When did you realize reading was your passion and a truly important part of your life?

This is a great question. I always liked books as a child, but I think the bug really took hold when I was four. That's when I read my first book by myself. I remember being excited about reading the whole book and ran to my mom to do it all again. I've been a bookworm ever since.

This week's question:

Genre Wars! What's your favorite genre and which book in that genre made it your favorite?

Again with the tough questions! Let's see... I have been gravitating toward paranormal romance for quite a while now, even when I wasn't reading YA quite so extensively. I can't even remember what one book got me started in that genre. Lately, however, I have been starting to get into steampunk. I have Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare to thank for that. It was a riveting read and made it to the top of my favorites of the year list. It was also awesome enough to pique my interest in the steampunk genre where I had never read any before.

Every week there is a new question. This week, the question is:

How many books are currently in your To-Be-Read (TBR) pile?

As far as physical books go, I have roughly 18. When you add egalleys to that number, it jumps up to 26. Then, add in the hundred or so Nookbooks I have yet to read, and there are around 125-150. If we're talking the wishlist, you can bet that there are well over 1,000. Yowza!

Every week there is a new question. This week, the question is:

Who is the one author that you are dying to meet?

I have a pretty big list of authors that I would love to meet: Amy Plum, Cassandra Clare, J.K. Rowling, Lauren DeStefano, Julie Kagawa, Cara Lynn Shultz, Maggie Stiefvater... honestly, it's a big list. Fortunately for me, I will have the chance to meet one of the aforementioned authors, as Maggie Stiefvater is going to be doing a book signing and Q&A session in a city a mere hour from my own. Book buddy Nikki and I already plan to be there with bells on (not literally, but you know what I mean).

Book Blogger Hop: May 20 - May 23

Book Blogger Hop

Every week there is a new question. This week, the question is:

If you were given the chance to spend one day in a fictional world (from a book), which book would it be from and what would that place be?

I know I review mostly YA paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and dystopian, but I also happen to be a sucker for Nora Roberts's paranormal romance series. If I could spend one day in a fictional world it would have to be Three Sisters Island from her Three Sisters Island trilogy. The idea of a little cottage by the woods sounds very appealing to me right now. I would love to get away for some peace, quiet, and reading. Also, Cafe Book sounds like a pretty awesome book store and I would love to hang out in a place like that.

Book Blogger Hop: The Non-Weekend Edition - April 11 - April 14

Book Blogger Hop

The Book Blogger Hop is a weekly event hosted by Crazy-For-Books. It is a way for book bloggers to connect and discover new blogs they might enjoy.

This week the Hop was unable to occur during its normal time, so today there is a special edition!

Every week there is a new question. This week, the question is:

"Outside of books, what is your guilty pleasure?"

My guilty pleasure is definitely watching syndicated episodes of Sex and the City. My husband hates it when I watch this show, but it kept me entertained when I was home alone with the baby while we were living in South Korea, so there is a bit of an attachment to it.

Every week there is a new question. This week, the question is:

"Since today is April Fool's Day in the USA, what is the best prank you have ever played on someone OR that someone has played on you?"

Honestly, I don't recall ever pulling any spectacular pranks. I've been pranked in my time, but I don't remember what exactly was done, so I don't suppose they were very spectacular, either. I'm fully expecting a prank from my French professor tomorrow. I wonder if I'll fall for it.

Book Blogger Hop: March 25 - March 28, 2011

Book Blogger Hop

The Book Blogger Hop is a weekly event hosted by Crazy-For-Books. It is a way for book bloggers to connect and discover new blogs they might enjoy.

Every week there is a new question. This week, the question is:

"If you could physically put yourself into a book or series…which one would it be and why?"

This is a really fun question. I think I would most like to put myself into the Harry Potter series. I might be a 28 year old woman, but I still think that would be such an interesting world to find myself in.
