Musing Mondays - April 18, 2011

This is a meme from Should Be Reading. All you have to do is answer the question of the week and then report back to Should Be Reading with your post link.

This week's question is:
What’s at the top of your must-buy list, right now? (or, if you don’t wait — if you’re more impulsive — what books have you recently purchased?)
I have several on my must-buy list at the moment. None have been released yet, but I have begun pre-ordering books with gift cards that I earn via Swagbucks and MyPoints. On my list right now are:

Die for Me by Amy Plum

In the Forests of the Night by Kersten Hamilton

Forever by Maggie Stiefvater

Musing Mondays - April 4, 2011

This is a meme from Should Be Reading. All you have to do is answer the question of the week.

This week's question is:
When you were little did other children tease you about your reading habits?
I was teased for a number of things: my height (I was the tallest girl in school all throughout elementary and middle school, maybe high school); my shyness; my red hair; my last name; my penchant for making good grades. Kids can be cruel. Books were my coping mechanism. I'm almost certain I was made fun of for keeping my nose in a book when I wasn't with my friends, but I never heard any of it. I was off on adventures in far-off lands or trying to solve mysteries. One of my favorite quotes is from the movie Matilda and emphasizes what books meant to me (and still do!) when I was a child: "So Matilda's strong young mind continued to grow, nurtured by the voices of all those authors who had sent their books out into the world like ships on the sea. These books gave Matilda a hopeful and comforting message: You are not alone." Sadly, I haven't read Roald Dahl's Matilda yet to see if that quote is actually in the book. I should probably do that soon.

Musing Mondays - March 28, 2011

This is a meme from Should Be Reading. All you have to do is answer the question of the week.

This week's question is:
Do you read books while you…

…eat? … bathe?… watch movies or tv?… listen to music?… While you’re on the computer?

I'll admit it, I read in all of the above scenarios. My Nook cover has a handy easel, so I can read while I eat by putting it on the table in front of me. I've been known to take long baths and read for hours. I often read while my little girl watches Happy Feet for what feels like the millionth time. When I was single I used to play CDs and read all afternoon with the music playing in the background. Last, but not least, I actually have read while on the computer... and I'm not talking about reading eBooks on my netbook (though I have done that, as well). I'm referring to the times that I am waiting for an important email and read a physical book to pass the time. Yes, I have a problem. Ha!

It's Monday! What are you reading? & Monday Musings - March 21, 2011

It's Monday! What are you reading is a weekly meme that comes to us from Sheila at Book Journey. To participate, simply post what you finished reading in the past week and what you plan to read this week. It is a good way to find other books you may enjoy reading. After you write your post, head over to Sheila's blog to leave your post's link on the link entry form at the bottom of the What are you reading? post.

What I Finished
Jane and the Unpleasantness of Scargrave Manor by Stephanie Barron

What I'm Reading
A Day in the Life of a Smiling Woman by Margaret Drabble

Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen (I got the free Girlebooks.com edition for my NOOK; it's worked out very well!)

This is a meme from Should Be Reading. All you have to do is answer the question of the week.

I don't usually do two separate meme posts in one day, but I saw this one late and loved this week's question:
"What is the last book you bought? Was it for you? for someone else? Have you read it, yet?"
I bought three books on Saturday with a B&N gift card I received from my bank. It was definitely all for me. My husband is pretty indulgent of my book addiction. It's a good think that he likes that I read! I haven't read any of them yet, but I probably will soon.

  1. Eliza's Daughter by Joan Aiken
  2. Colonel Brandon's Diary by Amanda Grange
  3. Charlotte Collins: A Continuation of Pride and Prejudice by Jennifer Becton
  4. The Iron King by Julie Kagawa (this is a last-minute addendum; I just came across this one and snapped it up for a song; I'm a sucker for books with faeries in the plot-line)

Musing Mondays - March 14, 2011

This is a meme from Should Be Reading. All you have to do is answer the question of the week.

I don't usually do two separate meme posts in one day, but I saw this one late and loved this week's question:

Do you have a favorite children’s book? Either one that you loved as a child, or one that you discovered later, and still enjoy? Tell us about it!
The book that immediately came to my mind was The Golden Egg Book by Margaret Wise Brown of Goodnight Moon fame. This is the book that I requested to have read to me the most. It is also the book I learned to read with. I still remember the day I read it cover to cover all by myself. I was four and so proud that I ran to my mom and read it to her, for a change. That was the start of a long, beautiful friendship with books. I have been hooked on reading ever since that single day.
