2012 TBR Pile Reading Challenge

From Bookish:

Challenge guidelines:

  1. This challenge will run from Jan 1, 2012 - Dec 31, 2012.
  2. As we would like to see quality reviews linked up to our monthly wrap-ups, only bloggers can enter. Sorry about that!
  3. Any genre, length or format of book counts, as long as it is a book that's been sitting on your shelf for some time now. Only books released in 2011 and earlier! NO ARCs and 2012 fresh-off-the-press releases allowed!
  4. You can list your books in advance or just put them in a wrap-up post. If you list them, feel free to change them as the mood takes you.
  5. When you sign up in the linky, put the direct link to your post about joining the 2012 TBR PILE Reading Challenge (You need to include the info + host list + challenge button. You can also grab the button code and add it to your sidebar!)
  6. You can move up levels, but no moving down.
  7. Sign-ups will be open until Dec 15, 2012, so feel free to join at any time throughout the year.
  8. At the end of each month one of the hosts will post a wrap-up. Every wrap-up will have it's unique theme, a mini-challenge, a giveaway and place for you to link up your reviews from this month. For each review you link up, you will get one entry in a drawing of one book of choice from Book Depository. It's open to INTERNATIONALS. For participating in the mini-challenge you will get +1 entry.
  9. If you miss a wrap-up post + giveaway, you can link up your reviews next month. Do not, however, try to link up one review twice - we will be checking ;)
  10. December is a wrap-up for the whole year. All the book reviews you linked up January-November + the ones you'll link up in December will be entered into a HUGE giveaway - 12 books, 12 winners, INTERNATIONAL.

Jenna from Fans Of Fiction - http://fansoffiction.blogspot.com/ @fansoffiction
Angel from Mermaids Vision - http://mermaidvision.wordpress.com @mermaidvisions
This is going to be my final challenge for 2012.  I have a large amount of unread books sitting on my shelf, just waiting to be read.  What better motivation than a reading challenge?  I'm going to aim for the maximum number of the A Friendly Hug level (20).  That should get me caught up on the books I've purchased this past year and still allow me time to read review books.  I can't wait to participate in all of the fun challenges that are coming up in 2012, as well as reading even more awesome books!

Info Post & Debut Lists
I am pretty confident that I can read at least 12 debuts, so I am most definitely going to shoot for that number and see where I land by the end of the year.  I would love to hit 20, but we'll just have to see.  The good news is that I already have several 2012 debuts in eGalley form thanks to Netgalley, so I'm already making a good start.  Good luck to all my fellow DAC participants!

2012 Ebook Challenge

From Workaday Reads:

  5. When you sign up in the linky, put the direct link to your post about joining the E-Book Reading Challenge.
  6. You can move up levels, but no moving down.

  1. Floppy disk - 5 ebooks
  2. CD - 10 ebooks
  3. DVD - 25 ebooks
  4. Memory stick - 50 ebooks
  5. Hard drive - 75 ebooks
  6. Server - 100 ebooks
  7. Human brain - 150 ebooks

My Goal

For 2011, I challenged myself to read 20 Ebooks and am very near to reaching the 30 ebook mark for the year.  Since I surpassed that level, for 2012 I will be challenging myself to read 50 ebooks (the Memory Stick level).  This should be just enough of a challenge to actually make it... challenging!  I'm excited to start over again in 2012.

2012 Young Adult Reading Challenge

From the Eclectic Bookshelf:

Run's January 1, 2012 - December 31, 2012.

The Rules:
  • Anyone can join.
  • You don't need a blog to participate.
  • Non-Bloggers: Post your list of books in the comment section of the wrap-up post on Jamie's blog.
  • Audio, eBooks, paper, re-reads all count.
  • No need to list your books in advance. You may select books as you go. Even if you list them now, you can change the list if needed.
There are four levels:
  1. The Mini YA Reading Challenge – Read 12 Young Adult novels.
  2. The "Fun Size" YA Reading Challenge – Read 20 Young Adult novels.
  3. The Jumbo Size YA Reading Challenge – Read 40 Young Adult novels.
  4. The Mega size YA Reading Challenge – Read 50+ Young Adult novels.
My Goal

I started the 2011 Young Adult Reading Challenge in March and increased my goal number twice after.  I will have finished over 100 YA novels by the end of the year, which more than qualifies me for the Mega Size challenge.  As a result, I will be going for the Mega Size level again in 2012.  The question is, how high will my number go?  I hope to read at least 150 books in 2012, so let's see if I can finish at least 110 YA novels.

2011 Spooktacular October Reading Challenge

Throughout the month of October, Marie over at Ramblings of a Daydreamer has an awesome new challenge for us. The name of the game is to read and review at least 3 books of a paranormal bent. If it surrounds characters such as faeries, vampires, werewolves, shifters, mermaids, angels, demons, witches, sirens, or banshees, it counts. Just read, review, & post the review link on the Mr. Linky widget on Marie's blog to be entered to win a giveaway. Each review counts as 1 entry. It's as easy as that!
The minimum is, as I mentioned, 3, but we all know I read a lot of paranormal. For that reason, I'm going to double my bet and go for 6. It should be a lot of fun and I can't wait to get started!
1. Every Other Day by Jennifer Lynn Barnes (review HERE)
2. Rot & Ruin by Jonathan Maberry (review HERE)
3. Frost by Marianna Baer (review HERE)
4. The Dead-Tossed Waves by Carrie Ryan (review HERE)
5. Possess by Gretchen McNeil (review HERE)
6. In the Forests of the Night by Kersten Hamilton (review coming soon)
GOAL COMPLETE!
7. Zombie Queen of Newbury High by Amanda Ashby (just read for fun)
8. Carrier of the Mark by Leigh Fallon (review coming soon)
9. Witchlanders by Lena Coakley (review HERE)
10. Crave by Melissa Darnell (review HERE)

Bout of Books Read-a-thon: Day 4

Today was a rough day. It took me almost 24 hours to finish Ballad, but I did finish. I have just started Blood Magic by Tessa Gratton, which I hope to finish before midnight tomorrow.

Today's progress:

Thursday, 8/25
Book(s) reading today: Ballad by Maggie Stiefvater; Blood Magic by Tessa Gratton
Total pages read today: 267
Total number of books I’ve read so far: 4
Today #insixwords:
Feel like a slacker. Slow reading!

Tomorrow should be a better day. I have tentative plans for a lunch out, book shopping, and coffee/cupcakes with Nikki. My parents are supposed to keep Renie for the weekend, so the hubs and I will get a much-needed date night, as well. I really hope it all goes off without a hitch.

Bout of Books Read-a-thon: Day 3

I finished my third book today. I read a great deal of Envy by Gregg Olsen while laying in a hospital bed in the ER. It definitely helped pass the 3 hours that I was there between x-rays and injections for tetanus, pain, & inflammation of the shoulder. I'm feeling quite a bit better, at least, and took a much-needed nap complete with the soundest sleep I've had in days. Hopefully my concentration will improve now, as I am currently reading Ballad by Maggie Stiefvater and don't want to miss a thing (Yeesh! I'm sounding like the Aerosmith song today.).

Here's my progress so far:

Wednesday, 8/24
Book(s) reading today: Envy by Gregg Olsen; Ballad by Maggie Stiefvater
Total pages read today: 329
Total number of books I’ve read so far: 3
Today #insixwords:
ER. Reading. Tweeting. Sleeping. No pain!

My next book will be Blood Magic by Tessa Gratton. From the looks of it, I will complete my goals. It will probably take me a couple of days to finish The Iron Thorn, the sixth book on my list, as I have a lot going on this weekend. However, I should finish on Sunday!

Bout of Books Read-a-thon: Day 2

I didn't get through as many pages as yesterday, but I did finish my second book, which was Hourglass by Myra McEntire. I am now working on Envy by Gregg Olsen and finding it slow-going, mainly due to my distraction over my shoulder/chest pain.

Here are my day 2 stats:

Tuesday, 8/23
Book(s) reading today: Hourglass by Myra McEntire; Envy by Gregg Olsen
Total pages read today: 305
Total number of books I’ve read so far: 2
Today #insixwords: Loved Hourglass. Possibly cracked ribs suck.

I'm hoping that I can pick up the pace again tomorrow. Once I finish Envy, I think I am going to move on to Ballad by Maggie Stiefvater. My overall progress is good. I think I can meet my goal.

Bout of Books Read-a-thon: Day 1

I have made excellent progress in the past 24 hours. I started and finished my first read-a-thon book, Fury by Elizabeth Miles, and started my second, Hourglass by Myra McEntire. My stats for day 1 are as follows:

Monday, 8/22

Book(s) reading today: Fury by Elizabeth Miles; Hourglass by Myra McEntire
Total pages read today: 502
Total number of books I’ve read so far: 1
Today #insixwords: Booking it through book number two!

If I can keep up the same pace tomorrow, I should be able to start my third book sometime in the late afternoon. I haven't fully decided, but I'm thinking that Envy by Gregg Olsen will be third in line. I'm having a lot of fun and am very interested in seeing just how far I'll get.

Bout of Books Read-a-thon

I have been looking for a read-a-thon that I can actually participate in for a while now. I have a 2 year old, so I don't have much opportunity to participate in the 2-3 day ones. This is a great one, as it takes place for an entire week! The Bout of Books Read-a-thon is hosted by Amanda at On a Book Bender and runs from August 22 to August 28. Want to participate? Then click HERE to enter your name in the provided form. Need more incentive? What if I were to tell you that there will be giveaways? Well, there will be GIVEAWAYS! What are you waiting for?

I will do my best to post my progress every day. The format will look something like this:

Review: Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters

by Jane Austen and Ben H. Winters
publisher: Quirk
date published: September 15, 2009
format: NOOK ebook
pages: 343
source: purchased

From Goodreads:
"Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters expands the original text of the beloved Jane Austen novel with all-new scenes of giant lobsters, rampaging octopi, two-headed sea serpents, and other biological monstrosities.

As our story opens, the Dashwood sisters are evicted from their childhood home and sent to live on a mysterious island full of savage creatures and dark secrets. While sensible Elinor falls in love with Edward Ferrars, her romantic sister Marianne is courted by both the handsome Willoughby and the hideous man-monster Colonel Brandon.

Can the Dashwood sisters triumph over meddlesome matriarchs and unscrupulous rogues to find true love? Or will they fall prey to the tentacles that are forever snapping at their heels? It's survival of the fittest and only the swiftest swimmers will find true love!"

Book Challenge Participations

What I Thought

I will preface my review by saying that I found Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, a Quirk publication by another writer, to be a fairly amusing, albeit silly, book. I saw the humor in the undead additions and giggled through several parts of the book. That was not to be the case for Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters. I wanted to be amused by this offering from Quirk, but I just could not find anything about the book that I liked. The addition of the sea monster plot line was not integrated as well as the zombie plot in P&P&Z. I will venture to say that if it had remained separate it might have made a decent book in its own right. There was very little of Austen's voice left in the story by the time Winters had finished with it. What was left was a confusing, tangled mess of a story line. Even the attempt to tie the two plots together using the youngest sister, Margaret Dashwood, fell short of the mark and left me wondering, "What the heck was this guy thinking?" In addition to the messy combining of stories, I found several errors of spelling and even an anachronism. The last time I checked, Elinor's name was not spelled as "Eleanor" and Gregor Mendel was not even born until 11 years after the publication of the original Sense and Sensibility in 1811. Continuity was another major problem for me. On more than one occasion, Winters introduced some pretty frightening monstrosities, only to have them suddenly disappear from the tale, never to be heard of again. I won't give anything away, but you will see what I mean if you choose to give this book a try.

There were other elements of the book that bothered me aside from those I have already mentioned. The first question that came to my mind was: "Why on earth would anyone want to build a gigantic glass dome 4 miles under the ocean if there were so many monsters about intent upon the destruction of all mankind?" I never got an answer to that question. The second question that came to me was, "Am I going to find out WHY the sea life had changed so drastically?" The answer: "No, Marla, that knowledge will not be shared with the likes of you." (At least, that is what I imagine the book would tell me if it were, you know, animate.) The third question I had was: "What did Colonel Brandon do to anger the sea witch into cursing him with tentacles upon his face?" Once again, no answers were forthcoming. Who knows, maybe sea witches don't need a reason for giving a man a squid-like head. My final major question was: "What became of the worst of the sea monsters that appeared in the book?" Much like my first three questions, this one remained unanswered.

I may be a huge Jane Austen fan, but that fact does not exclude me from enjoying a farce-like rendition of her books. I just did not find this one to be well-done. It left more questions unanswered than answered and often gave me headaches due to its poorly knit together series of secondary plots. For that reason, I give this book a rating of 1 hoot. I am left wanting to read the original Sense and Sensibility to soothe my frayed nerves and push all those wasted hours from my memory.

Insomnia + Irritation With the Book I'm Reading + Leftover Swagbucks Amazon Gift Card Balance =

late-night online shopping. I've been unable to find any of the books I have on my to-read list for the Sense and Sensibility Bicentenary Challenge in either of the libraries here, so I did some digging on B&N.com and Amazon. I struck pay dirt with uber cheap copies of:

The Third Sister by Julia Barrett

and Elinor and Marianne: A Sequel to Sense and Sensibility by Emma Tennant.

As for the rest of my list, I'd better get cracking on earning more Amazon gift cards through Swagbucks and another B&N gift card through MyPoints if I'm going to procure them all by the end of the year. I know I'll have access to the Jane Austen mysteries when we move back to the 'Boro in August, but I'm not so sure about the rest of them.

Speaking of my to-read list, the overall list on Goodreads has reached insanely epic proportions. It would probably take a lifetime for me to read them all, but I'm nothing if not ambitious when it comes to reading. The more the merrier.

2011 E-Book Reading Challenge (And yes, it's my 4th one)

I came across yet another reading challenge that has piqued my interest. This one comes from The Ladybug Reads. I will be following along with my NOOK, but am unsure as to how many I will read since this challenge combines well with all of my other challenges. I will be setting my counter for 20, however, as that is the number I would love to achieve, and will do a wrap-up post at the end of the year detailing how much I ultimately read. In the meantime, every time I finish an e-book, I will post the above graphic along with the review.

So far this year, I have read 3 e-books:

  1. Persuasion by Jane Austen
  2. Candide by Voltaire
  3. Goddess of Legend by P.C. Cast
I am currently working on number 4, which is Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters. What are you currently reading on your e-reader?

The Sense and Sensibility Bicentenary Challenge 2011

Here is another wonderful reading challenge opportunity from Austenprose-A Jane Austen Blog. It is the bicentennial anniversary of the publication of one of my favorite books of all time: Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. There are a lot of fun Jane Austen biographies out there, as well as several spin-offs. In fact, I have started a nice collection of my own that I am simply itching to expand. Here is another good excuse for me to do so. *wink*

For this challenge, I will be committing to the Aficionada level, which means I will be reading/viewing 9-12 books/films. My projected book/film list is as follows:

Books

  • Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen - finished March 27
  • Colonel Brandon's Diary by Amanda Grange
  • Elinore and Marianne: A Sequel to Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility by Emma Tennant
  • Eliza's Daughter by Joan Aiken
  • Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters by Jane Austen and Ben H. Winters - finished March 10
  • The Cookbook Collector by Allegra Goodman
  • The Dashwood Sisters Secrets of Love by Rosie Rushton
  • The Third Sister by Jane Barrett
Movies
  • Sense and Sensibility (1995)
  • Sense and Sensibility (2008) - watched it on March 26

With that being said, it's time to go. I've got a lot of reading to do!

Being a Jane Austen Mystery Reading Challenge 2011

I'm already participating in the Goodreads 2011 reading challenge with a commitment to read 50 books this year. I just stumbled upon another challenge that I'm very excited about at Austen Prose-A Jane Austen Blog. The challenge is to read novels from Stephanie Barron's Being a Jane Austen Mystery series. I first discovered these fun novels about 5 years ago and really enjoyed the ones that I have gotten to read so far. I still have several of them on my Goodreads "To-Read" list, so this would be a wonderful opportunity to check them off the list.

There are 3 different levels of commitment: Neophyte (read 1-4 novels); Disciple (5-8 novels); and Aficionada (9-11 novels). I would love to go for the Aficionada level, but my local libraries don't have any books from the series, so I am going to have to procure them for myself. I just ordered the first novel using an Amazon gift card that I earned via Swagbucks, but it will take quite a length of time to collect all 11 novels. Therefor, I think I will go for the Disciple level and if I can read more than that, great!

There are currently 10 novels with an 11th to be released in August. The novels are as follows:

It is my goal to get through at least the first 8. If I'm going to go for the Disciple level, I want to go big! Who knows, maybe I'll be able to keep pushing into the Aficionada level and up my Goodreads commitment in the process. A girl needs a little ambition in her life.

Update; June 6, 2011 - I am doing a lot more ARC and galley reviews than I would have anticipated, so something has to give. I have not made any progress on this challenge in quite a while, so I am going to have to bow out for this year. Hopefully I can give it another shot next year.
