What's Your Status? August 27, 2011

This meme comes from Zakiya at Butterfly Feet Walking On Life. I will be hosting for the entire month of August, so feel free to post your links in the widget at the end of this post. The object is to post what you have finished in the last week, what you are currently reading, what you plan to read in the coming week, and what you want to buy next. You can also post about reviews you've written and memes you have done, though these aren't mandatory. I'm also going to include the status of my reading challenges.

I had an eventful weekend. After I prepared last week's post on Friday, my 2 year old daughter decided it would be fun to run away from us. I wiped out on a concrete walkway in front of one of the apartment buildings and hit my head on a concrete stoop, resulting in a trip to the ER. I was diagnosed as having a minor concussion and didn't finish one of the books as I had planned. Thus, you will be seeing a repeat in this week's books finished section. I've also been participating in a read-a-thon all this week, so I have a high amount of books that I've finished for the week overall.

Books Finished: Week of August 21 - August 27

Bout of Books Read-a-thon: Day 4

Today was a rough day. It took me almost 24 hours to finish Ballad, but I did finish. I have just started Blood Magic by Tessa Gratton, which I hope to finish before midnight tomorrow.

Today's progress:

Thursday, 8/25
Book(s) reading today: Ballad by Maggie Stiefvater; Blood Magic by Tessa Gratton
Total pages read today: 267
Total number of books I’ve read so far: 4
Today #insixwords:
Feel like a slacker. Slow reading!

Tomorrow should be a better day. I have tentative plans for a lunch out, book shopping, and coffee/cupcakes with Nikki. My parents are supposed to keep Renie for the weekend, so the hubs and I will get a much-needed date night, as well. I really hope it all goes off without a hitch.

Bout of Books Read-a-thon: Day 3

I finished my third book today. I read a great deal of Envy by Gregg Olsen while laying in a hospital bed in the ER. It definitely helped pass the 3 hours that I was there between x-rays and injections for tetanus, pain, & inflammation of the shoulder. I'm feeling quite a bit better, at least, and took a much-needed nap complete with the soundest sleep I've had in days. Hopefully my concentration will improve now, as I am currently reading Ballad by Maggie Stiefvater and don't want to miss a thing (Yeesh! I'm sounding like the Aerosmith song today.).

Here's my progress so far:

Wednesday, 8/24
Book(s) reading today: Envy by Gregg Olsen; Ballad by Maggie Stiefvater
Total pages read today: 329
Total number of books I’ve read so far: 3
Today #insixwords:
ER. Reading. Tweeting. Sleeping. No pain!

My next book will be Blood Magic by Tessa Gratton. From the looks of it, I will complete my goals. It will probably take me a couple of days to finish The Iron Thorn, the sixth book on my list, as I have a lot going on this weekend. However, I should finish on Sunday!

Bout of Books Read-a-thon: Day 2

I didn't get through as many pages as yesterday, but I did finish my second book, which was Hourglass by Myra McEntire. I am now working on Envy by Gregg Olsen and finding it slow-going, mainly due to my distraction over my shoulder/chest pain.

Here are my day 2 stats:

Tuesday, 8/23
Book(s) reading today: Hourglass by Myra McEntire; Envy by Gregg Olsen
Total pages read today: 305
Total number of books I’ve read so far: 2
Today #insixwords: Loved Hourglass. Possibly cracked ribs suck.

I'm hoping that I can pick up the pace again tomorrow. Once I finish Envy, I think I am going to move on to Ballad by Maggie Stiefvater. My overall progress is good. I think I can meet my goal.

Waiting on Wednesday: August 24, 2011

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event from Jill at Breaking the Spine. To participate, simply share that book(s) you are eagerly awaiting the release of and report back to Breaking the Spine with the link to your post. Clicking the image above will take you straight to her post and widget. (Special note: The nifty button above comes from Lindsay at The Violet Hour. Isn't it pretty?)

This week I'm waiting on Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins. I loved Anna and the French Kiss far more than I would have guessed and simply MUST read more books by her. It will hit store shelves on September 29, 2011.

From Goodreads:

Budding designer Lola Nolan doesn’t believe in fashion . . . she believes in costume. The more expressive the outfit -- more sparkly, more fun, more wild -- the better. But even though Lola’s style is outrageous, she’s a devoted daughter and friend with some big plans for the future. And everything is pretty perfect (right down to her hot rocker boyfriend) until the dreaded Bell twins, Calliope and Cricket, return to the neighborhood.

When Cricket -- a gifted inventor -- steps out from his twin sister’s shadow and back into Lola’s life, she must finally reconcile a lifetime of feelings for the boy next door.

Review: Anna and the French Kiss

by Stephanie Perkins
publisher: Dutton Children's
date published: December 2, 2010
format: hardcover
pages: 372
source: from the library
Amazon / Goodreads / B&N

From Goodreads:
Anna is looking forward to her senior year in Atlanta, where she has a great job, a loyal best friend, and a crush on the verge of becoming more. Which is why she is less than thrilled about being shipped off to boarding school in Paris - until she meets Etienne St. Clair: perfect, Parisian (and English and American, which makes for a swoon-worthy accent), and utterly irresistible. The only problem is that he's taken, and Anna might be, too, if anything comes of her almost-relationship back home.

As winter melts into spring, will a year of romantic near - misses end with the French kiss Anna - and readers - have long awaited?
What I Thought

Readers of my blog have probably realized by now that I rarely read contemporary fiction unless it has supernatural/paranormal elements. However, I had heard so many good things about Stephanie Perkins's Anna and the French Kiss that I just had to give it a try. My chance came when my local library at long last procured a copy of the book, which I was able to place a hold on. When I finally opened the cover, I quickly realized what all the fuss was about. This book is a refreshing, fun, and well-written story that I was loathe to put down.

Anna and the French Kiss is probably one of the most fun books I have read this year. Sometimes you need something light and flirty to read. This book definitely fits the bill. It is filled with well-developed characters and funny dialogue that left me laughing out loud on several occasions. Anna, for all of her obliviousness, is a wonderfully witty character who I absolutely adored. I could definitely appreciate her passion for reviewing films, since it is not so very different from what I do here on my blog. Following her journey to Paris and subsequent struggle to adapt to the city was a lot of fun, as well. It was another aspect that I could relate to very well (though Paris was not the city I experienced). As for Etienne, I could definitely see what the excitement was all about. Holy smokes! There are a couple of aspects that are somewhat unappealing, but he is, overall, a male lead that is very capable of making a girl's heart go pitter-pat. Some of the scenes between him and Anna are very emotionally wrought and romantic. From the accent to the physical description, he is quite the love interest. C'est magnifique!

I could not get enough of descriptions of this book's setting. Paris is somewhere that I would love to visit, so reading a book that takes place there is a great treat. Stephanie Perkins takes a lot of care to infuse vivid imagery into every chapter, which makes for a brilliant picture for the mind's eye. Her descriptions and imagery almost made me feel as if I were really there. The school, too, was a lot of fun to read about. Though it is a school setting, it is intriguing thanks to both its setting and the students that make up the student body. There are mean girls, arrogant boys, artistic kids, athletic kids, shy kids, and nerdy kids, just like you would find in any other school. This made for an engaging background for the story to take place against, as well as keeping the plot moving and varied.

For all that this book was read on a whim, I have discovered a fun read that I simply can not get away with leaving out of my collection. I will not be completely happy until I own my own copy. If you are looking for a fun, humorous read, you can't go wrong with Stephanie Perkins. If you haven't read it yet, you definitely should. You owe it to yourself to pick up a copy. I give Anna and the French Kiss 5 hoots.

Bout of Books Read-a-thon: Day 1

I have made excellent progress in the past 24 hours. I started and finished my first read-a-thon book, Fury by Elizabeth Miles, and started my second, Hourglass by Myra McEntire. My stats for day 1 are as follows:

Monday, 8/22

Book(s) reading today: Fury by Elizabeth Miles; Hourglass by Myra McEntire
Total pages read today: 502
Total number of books I’ve read so far: 1
Today #insixwords: Booking it through book number two!

If I can keep up the same pace tomorrow, I should be able to start my third book sometime in the late afternoon. I haven't fully decided, but I'm thinking that Envy by Gregg Olsen will be third in line. I'm having a lot of fun and am very interested in seeing just how far I'll get.

Review: This Dark Endeavor

by Kenneth Oppel
publisher: Simon & Schuster BFYR
date of publication: August 23, 2011
format: ARC
pages: 298
source: from the publisher
Amazon / Goodreads / B&N

From Goodreads:
Victor and Konrad are the twin brothers Frankenstein. They are nearly inseparable. Growing up, their lives are filled with imaginary adventures...until the day their adventures turn all too real.

They stumble upon The Dark Library, and secret books of alchemy and ancient remedies are discovered. Father forbids that they ever enter the room again, but this only piques Victor's curiosity more. When Konrad falls gravely ill, Victor is not satisfied with the various doctors his parents have called in to help. He is drawn back to The Dark Library where he uncovers an ancient formula for the Elixir of Life. With their friend Elizabeth, Henry and Victor immediately set out to find assistance from a man who was once known for his alchemical works to help create the formula.

Determination and the unthinkable outcome of losing his brother spur Victor on in the quest for the three ingredients that will save Konrad's life. After scaling the highest trees in the Strumwald, diving into the deepest lake caves, and sacrificing one’s own body part, the three fearless friends risk their lives to save another.
What I Thought

I am about to make a shameful confession: I am not a big fan of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. You may ask, "Why read this book, then?" The main reason I wanted to read this book is the subject matter. Every time I have read Frankenstein, I have wondered, "What led Victor Frankenstein to do these things? What drives him?" Kenneth Oppel tackles these questions with great skill and imagination in This Dark Endeavor.

In this very inventive prequel, we are introduced to a fifteen year old Victor; his twin brother, Konrad; their fiery cousin, Elizabeth; and their timid, poetic friend, Henry Clerval. Life is pretty good for this young quartet. They are educated in a liberal, progressive fashion by Victor and Konrad's parents as they explore the mysterious passages of their chateau. It isn't until Victor, Konrad, and Elizabeth stumble upon a library hidden beneath the floors of the chateau that things begin to change. This dark library houses ancient tomes detailing alchemical processes and elixirs, all of which pique Victor's curiosity. When Konrad falls victim to a mysterious illness, Victor is determined to save him by discovering the formula needed to create the mythical Elixir of Life. Can he overcome the dangers involved in creating the potion and save his brother?

This book is extremely action-packed. There were several passages that had me literally sitting up in anxiety, wondering if Victor, Elizabeth, and Henry would escape unscathed. There is just the right amount of terror to make the book hearken back to Mary Shelley's classic work. In addition, there are some amazingly intense scenes that place our protagonists in grave dangers and will very nearly have you biting your nails in anticipation. From lammergeirs (bearded vultures) to a seemingly supernaturally intelligent lynx, there are creatures galore that add to the overall excitement.

Finally, human nature plays a huge part in this story. Such themes as jealousy, love, greed, and loyalty can be found in abundance, several of which are housed in Victor simultaneously. He is, indeed, the most conflicted character of the lot and has a lot of weight to bear as he struggles with each emotion. I was riveted as I waited to see which emotions would win Victor over and how he would deal with each one. I could definitely see shades of the character he would become in the pages of Frankenstein.

This Dark Endeavor is a highly entertaining read and is a must for fans of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Even if, like me, you are not a fan, I would still recommend giving this book a try. I truly enjoyed it and am glad to have read it. If you are fond of variations on classic literature, you should definitely read this book. I give This Dark Endeavor 4 hoots.

Obligatory legal statement: This ARC was provided to me free of charge by the publisher in exchange for a fair and unbiased review. Many thanks to Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers for the opportunity of reviewing this book.

In My Mailbox - August 21, 2011

In My Mailbox is a weekly meme from The Story Siren where you can share your new acquisitions. They can come from anywhere: through the mail, via the library, purchased from a store, or downloaded as ebooks. It's up to you!

Though I've been doing vlogs for the past few weeks, I'm going to be taking a break from filming this week. I had a pretty bad fall on Friday which resulted in a minor concussion and a lot of bruising. I suspect that I look a fright, so I will spare you all from that and will post just the covers for the books I've received this week, instead. I will be back next week with another vlog post, however.
